Hollins University President Mary Dana Hinton has been named by the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia, Inc. (CICV) as chair of its board of directors.

The 28-member board, representing nonprofit Virginia colleges and universities, selected new leadership at its annual meeting on September 25 to guide CICV through the fiscal year that began on October 1. University of Richmond President Kevin Hallock will serve as vice chair, and Roanoke College President Frank Shushok will assume the role of secretary/treasurer.

“Presidents Hinton, Hallock, and Shushok collectively represent a smart and dynamic voice for higher education in Virginia. With their leadership, our organization is poised for another year of impactful advocacy at the state capitol as we share the value and impact of independent higher education in the commonwealth. These new officers’ collective vision and experience will be a great guide for collaboration among our members,” said CICV President Christopher K. Peace.

“I am honored to serve as chair of the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia,” said Hinton. “Our member institutions are crucial in advancing education, equity, and opportunity. I look forward to working with my colleagues to strengthen the impact of independent higher education, maintain our affordability, increase access to opportunity, and advocate for the resources and policies that will allow our colleges and universities to thrive.”

In addressing his new role, Hallock stated, “I’m grateful to serve as vice chair of CICV, especially at a time when independent higher education offers so much value. Our institutions provide transformative experiences for students. I’m excited to collaborate with terrific colleagues to ensure we continue offering world-class educational opportunities and contributing meaningfully to Virginia’s economy and communities.”

Shushok remarked, “As secretary/treasurer of CICV, I am excited to contribute to supporting our member institutions. Independent colleges in Virginia are vital to the state’s educational landscape. I look forward to working with my fellow presidents to ensure these schools remain strong, vibrant, and accessible to students from all walks of life.”

CICV represents 28 nonprofit private colleges and universities in Virginia. Since its founding in 1971, CICV has worked to improve the quality of education, strengthen resources, and highlight the importance of private higher education in the commonwealth.
